is a percussion ensemble with roots in the gong/metallophone orchestras of Southeast Asia, specifically those of Central Java in Indonesia. In addition to presenting traditional Javanese music, Gamelan Encantada is committed to performing contemporary and experimental music, and in 2011, celebrated their 20th Anniversary with the release of their CD "Oasis in the Desert: New Music from New Mexico."
Frequent past participants in Albuquerque's Festival of Asian Cultures and at various events at the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, Gamelan Encantada was also one of the featured local groups at the 2006 Globalquerque World Music Festival, and in 2012 were Artists in Residence at UNM's Composers Symposium. Most recently, they performed with David Felberg, James Holland and Nathan Ukens at the Sunday Chatter Chamber Music Series (on works combining violin, cello and horn with gamelan), in honor of the West Coast composer Lou Harrison, as part of a world-wide celebration of the centennial of his birth.
Today's concert will focus mainly on pieces by women composers, including a suite of traditional Hebrew songs set to gamelan by Jody Diamond (a leading figure in the American Gamelan scene and one of Lou Harrison's first gamelan teachers), a piece by SFUAD graduate Maria Siino (now a student in composition at Mills College), and a piece by Barbara Benary (of NYC's Gamelan Son of Lion), named after the "hot rolled steel" that forms the keys of the majority of the instruments that Gamelan Encantada will be using in this concert. We will also be premiering a piece written by local composer (and band member) Bob Kasenchak.
Gamelan Encantada is directed by Jenny DeBouzek. Current members are: Oscar Alcala, Sooz Hoffman, Bob Kasenchak, Kristen Keilman, Tessa Martinez, Chris Morosin, Mike Russo, Nathan Smerage, and Devin Williams.

The DCS is an international grassroots movement entirely motivated by volunteers who want to make a difference to mental health resources. Local bakers donate melancholy-themed bake goods for the sale, with all proceeds going to support a resource of the organizer's choosing. This event will benefit The Depression & Bipolar Support Alliance, Albuquerque Chapter.
If you or anyone you know is interested in baking or providing aesthetic for this event please inquire here: https://missberlinette.typeform.com/to/SVYq6I
Often, discussion of mental illness is stigmatized or can be triggering, but the DCS provides a platform which recognizes that mental illness is neither a rarity nor a subject which should remain the burden of the individual behind closed doors.
The Depression & Bipolar Support Alliance
is an international non-profit mental health organization dedicated to providing weekly peer support groups for those living with the challenges and triumphs of a mood disorder and related behavioral health and medical health issues. In an environment of mutual understanding, caring, and encouragement, we at DBSA Albuquerque believe every peer has the ability and strength within to empower themselves in their recovery journeys. Peer support is a very important factor in meaningful wellness and recovery for many of those with mental health issues.
